Coconut Confusion…The Dazzling Drupe!!!

           What’s all the fuss about? Coconut Oil is often described as “the healthiest Oil on earth”. But this wasn’t always so. Coconut oil was demonized because it had the reputation of causing cholesterol and heart diseases because of its high saturated fat content. A study conducted nearly 40 years ago even confirmed that it caused heart diseases. But , this research was conducted on Hydrogenated Coconut Oil. All hydrogenated coconut oils tend to raise cholesterol levels. So the studies do not prove that “Natural Coconut Oil” or “Non-Hydrogenated” coconut oil causes heart diseases.

             Coconut oil is available in its refined and unrefined forms. Refined coconut oil is prepared by application of heat to the dried kernel( also called Copra). This type of coconut oil is called RBD coconut oil which stands for Refined, Bleached and Deodorized. This is usually done to prolong shelf life. Unrefined coconut oil, also called as Virgin Coconut Oil, is usually obtained by cold press. In this, died coconut is pressed to obtain oil. Another way to obtain Virgin coconut oil is when  the oil is extracted from fresh coconut meat without drying first. “Coconut milk” is expressed first by pressing it out of the wet coconut meat. The oil is then further separated from the water. Methods which can be used to separate the oil from the water include boiling, fermentation, refrigeration, enzymes and mechanical centrifuge.

Advantages Of Virgin Coconut Oil:-

Its virgin coconut oil that has numerous benefits than ordinary coconut oil. There are 10 proven theories. They are:-

No, they contain so-called Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) – which are fatty acids of a medium length .Most of the fatty acids in the diet are long-chain fatty acids, but the medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil are metabolized differently .They go straight to the liver from the digestive tract, where they are used as a quick source energy or turned into so-called ketone bodies, which can have therapeutic effects on brain disorders like epilepsy and Alzheimer’s.

    Great article. People are so confused with all the inaccurate information circulating. I have seen claims that coconuts are bad because they are loaded in saturated fats. MCT are obviously different and don’t receive the accolades they deserve. Great article that lays out so many accurate health benefits.

      So true. Also according to research almond oil and avacado oil are more suitable for frying. Yet again they aren’t economical. Virgin coconut oil has many benefits and it should be replaced by the other refined oils we use.
