Coffee- Boon Or Bane?

 

 

Coffee has gotten this very bad reputation in the past. It is true that coffee can cause a mild elevation in blood pressure in short term. But, long term studies suggests it actually lowers the risks of some serious diseases.

Coffee drinkers have upto 67% lower risks of Type II Diabetes and at much lower risks of developing neuro-degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

You may be surprised to hear that coffee is also loaded with antioxidants. In fact, it is the biggest source of antioxidants in the modern diet, outranking both fruits and vegetables, combined.

Caffeine tends to increase the body’s metabolism.Caffeine has effects on the brain such as, it improves memory, mood , reaction time, vigilance and overall brain function.

If you are sensitive to coffee and it tends to disrupt your sleep, then green tea has similar health benefits like coffee but lesser amount of caffeine.

    There are positive effects. One that I found very interesting is that it lowers risk of many cancers.

    Also as mentioned, it also lower risk of diabetes type 2.

    However, for those who already have diabetes type 2 or those who are highly stressed, coffee can actually bring more harm than good. It spikes your blood sugar and can stress adrenal glands.

    I would say, if you are used to drink daily coffee, keep drinking. If you feel stressed or irritated, stop coffee. If you never drink coffee and heard about protective effects, don’t start. Better look for alternatives.
